‘BOOKING.COM TRAVELLER REVIEW AWARDS 2021’

We are so proud to announce that we’ve won the Booking.com “Traveller Review Awards 2021”.

In a period with limited possibilities like last year, the distinction of Traveller Review Awards 2021 from Booking.com with a score of 9.9 out of 10 is a special honor.

We thank all the guests one by one for this rating of Sarpidon Suites

This award gives us more energy in the continuous effort to develop and improve our services.

Booking.com is the most popular accommodation booking platform in the world and the Traveller Review Awards are part of an annual appreciation programme that recognises Booking.com partners for their exceptional hospitality. This is demonstrated by the review scores that travellers leave after their stay. To be a winner in the Traveller Review Awards 2021, our accommodations needed to make sure their average review score was super high (between 8 and 10) and that each accommodation had a certain amount of positive reviews left by travellers after their stay in the last 12 months.

Who was Sarpidon

With the name Sarpidon are known several figures in Greek mythology

In the later standard tradition, Sarpidon was the son of Zeus and Europa, and the brother of Minos and Rhadamanthus, while in other accounts Sarpedon who fought at Troy was the grandson of the Sarpedon who was the brother of Minos.

Other myth says Sarpedon, was a son of Zeus, who fought on the side of Troy in the Trojan War. Although in the Iliad, he was the son of Zeus and Laodamia, the daughter of Bellerophon

Another myth wants Sarpidon to be a Thracian son of Poseidon, eponym of Cape Sarpedon near the outlet of the River Hebrus, and brother to Poltys, King of Aenus. Unlike the other two Sarpedons, this Thracian Sarpedon was not a hero, but an insolent individual who was shot to death by Heracles as the latter was sailing away from Aenus.

Last but not least Sarpedon refers as son of Zeus and Lardane and brother of Argus

Raki or Tsikoudia

Raki or Tsikoudia

RAKI OR TSIKOUDIA IS A LOCAL CRETAN DISTILLED ALCOHOLIC DRINK, A CLEAR AND FRAGRANT LIQUOR WHICH VISITORS ARE OFFERED AS A WELCOMING GESTURE, OR AT THE END OF A MEAL.

Raki contains about 37% alcohol, similar to Scotch whiskey or gin. It is served straight, in shot glasses, usually well chilled. Every autumn, after the grape harvest, various wine celebrations begin. Then comes the manufacture of raki. The custom of distilleries was instituted by Eleftherios Venizelos in 1920, when special permits were given to farmers to distill raki for additional income. The strafylla (crushed grapes), what is left behind once grapes have been pressed to make wine, are slowly boiled in special cauldrons. Drop by drop, raki begins to flow; very strong at first, almost pure alcohol, and then properly balanced.

The cretan raki is not just a local product. It is an intrinsic part of the identity of the local culture and expresses cretan hospitality.

Nightlife

CRETE HAS THE MOST LIVELY NIGHTLIFE OF ALL THE GREEK ISLANDS.

There is a wide variety of entertainment choices, for all tastes and all ages, from wild foam parties to traditional evenings with Cretan music and dances.

Summer in Crete and in Greece means “tables outside”: The guests meet the local people and everyone joins the party. After the sunset, people start gathering in “ouzo shops” and “taverns” (which are usually next to the sea or have a view to the sea) to enjoy “tsikoudia” (traditional local drink) or ouzo and special snacks.

The night continues in various music halls, discos, clubs, bars, “bouzouki” or “Cretan Lira” places (halls with live Greek or Cretan music) in the beautiful narrow streets or at the coastal zone of the island until the morning. For those who want something more relaxed, there are various art festivals and cultural events, like theatre performances, concerts with any kind of music and dance and summer cinemas.

Cosmopolitan nightclubs and stylish bar-restaurants, small atmospheric bars and picturesque cafés where you can enjoy a drink, or maybe a cocktail, or just a good cup of coffee. Some are hidden among the alleys of the Old City in historic buildings or courtyards, others are on the waterfront overlooking the sea.  Chania has it all, whatever your preference, whether it’s a relaxing drink, or endless partying.  Chania is a bustling vibrant town!!

The old town, the old port, Splantzia, Hatzimichalis Dalianis, or Akrotiri, are just a few of the areas you can wander around until you find the perfect fun place: Cafés, bars, clubs, a live Greek and international music scene, including a number of jazz bars, all invite you to experience the city’s nightlife to the full.

A few kilometers outside Chania, to the west of the city, are the summer resorts of Agia Marina (8 km) and Platanias (11 km).  Agia Marina has a beautiful beach, a number of good tavernas and an unparalleled nightlife, which altogether offer an experience definitely not to be missed.  In Platanias you will find an exciting nightlife, bars, restaurants, a long sandy beach, and numerous hotels spread out along the coast.
